Politics again

We live in strange political times. Over in the states a madman reigns over a hugely corrupt government and liberty and freedom are words used to corral the masses. We over here tend to laugh at the american government. Yet our own government has just as dire policies and actions to be ashamed off. Blair is undoubtably a terrible PM, he is rocked by scandal after scandal and like the hapless yanbks we do.......nothing.

So here are a few choice scandals for you to chew over.

1) Craig Murray. British ambassador to Uzbekistan. Reports to his boss Jack straw that the Uzbeks are into such charming habits as boiling people alive, ripping out fingernails and finding inventice ways to hurt people. Any protest or movement against Islam Karimovs gorvernment is met with bloody torture and execution. We of course are cozy with the Uzbeks because they gave us land for military bases and have lots of oil and gas. Jack Straw actually flat out LIES when he says he has no knowledge of us using information gaining from torture as Craig Murray has told him precisely that. Murray is recalled and a breif and rather unsuccessful smear campaign against him is raised. His book is blocked by the government over 2 documents he wanted to include. Not to be outdone, he released them on his website http://www.craigmurray.org.uk/weblog.html

2) The Al-Jazeera memo. Dubya Bush decides that as Al-jazeera publish a non-American biased format they should be roughly dealt with. He reckons bombing their Doha headquarters ought to do it. Qatar of course being an ally of ours (and his) Blair, in a rare moment of non-fuck-headery talks him out of it. Implausible yes, but an official memo which has been confirmed as true exists detailing such. Learn more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Jazeera_bombing_memo
Why are we even supporting such an idiot as Bush when he thinks this is a good idea? It certainly casts the shelling of the Iraqi branch of Al-Jazeera in a different light, maybe not such an accident as we were told.

3) The Iraq war. We were told Saddam would attack with WMD, possibly with only 45 mins notice. We were told he was a "Clear and present danger" and we were told that the Iraqis would welcome us with open arms. Of course the British military themselves were against it, knowing perhaps that the unending police actions they were to perform immediately after the battle was won would drain them horribly, not to mention generals advised a rest period for the British military, which had after all been kicking butt around the world for a fair while, they wanted to restock, consolidate and give their troops a breather. Next the people to this nation decided we didn't want to go. 1/60th of the entire population marched on one day to one spot (London) to stop the war. It was the single biggest political demonstration in our country ever. It did nothing. We the people were ignored. Blairs own cabinet lost 2 ministers because they disagreed with going to war. Hans Blix, top UN WMD guy said Saddam was no threat. Luckily they were all wrong, the Iraqis welcomed us as heroes and after a brief month long period, our troops left, Iraqi troops took over policing and Iraq became a democratic paradise. And all at no cost to the British taxpayer, it was all funded by the oil of grateful Iraqis.

Except of course, that never happened, the Americans and us have totally botched Iraq in every meaningful sense of the word.
